New Cardigan Design
I am so beyond excited about this project! I love it so so much already :)
I am taking a Speech class this semester in college, and it has already been so educational and uplifting. This course is teaching me how to better communicate and interact with others, which is a trait that I believe we continue to learn forever.
In a lecture this week, my professor talking briefly about sympathy and empathy. She gave a pretty extreme example, but let me put it as simply as I know how.
First off, let’s give a couple basic definitions.
Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another
Sympathy: feelings of pity/sorrow for someone else’s misfortune
In short, they are similar. It is difficult to decipher between the two...but there is a big difference. You can have one and not the other. Often, I think we do.
You can be sympathetic towards someone and lack empathy. In the same way, you can be empathetic towards another and lack sympathy.
Think of it this way: Empathy is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Understand what they did, what they did, why they believe what they believe, etc. (so very many scenarios) Sympathy is having “feelings” or emotion towards that person because of what those actions led to.
Imagine someone getting in trouble. You can show empathy by putting yourself in their place. You can show sympathy because they are now going to suffer a consequence.
Now, there is SO much more that could be said about this topic. I am one person, and my goal in each devotion that I share is to encourage you!
A couple of really impactful bible verses about the subject:
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (paraphrased)
Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15 (sympathy)
Until next time,
Amy Kate <3
