I’m reading a really beautiful and impactful book right now, and I talked about it a tiny bit in the podcast.
One of the things this book discussed is comparing what the WORLD looks at and how it doesn’t align with what GOD looks at. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.””
There are many other similar verses in the Bible. One that is also discussed in the chapter is Proverbs 31:30, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting’ but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Now, that verse and Proverbs 31 as a whole is primarily talking about women, and what to look for in a wife. But that specific verse is beautiful.
In this society, we are encouraged to care so much about the way we look. Often without meaning to, we judge someone by their appearance instead of looking at their heart through their actions.
God looks at the heart. God cares so much more about how we act, what we say, how we glorify Him, and how we display what is in our hearts than he cares about our outward appearance.
Now a final note that I think can easily be missed when discussing this topic: you ARE beautiful. Whoever and wherever you are, you’re beautiful simply because YOU are made in the image of God. The way we treat ourselves matters, because our bodies are temple designed to bring glory and honor to the One who created us.
Whether your outward appearance, or judging others based on theirs is something you struggle with or not, I pray that God gives you eyes to see what He sees. I pray that you’re reminded daily of how beautiful you are, and how beautiful those around you are. I pray that what is in your heart and pure and God-honoring, and that it flows out in all you do.
Have a making-filled week,
