Beachcomber Dishcloth | Free Crochet Pattern

This crocheted dishcloth is the third in my Spring Dishcloth Collection! This unique dishcloth is crocheted corner-to-corner style, but uses half double crochet instead of the standard double crochet. Follow along with the video tutorial or written pattern!

Materials:

  • Approximately 45 grams/90 yards of any worsted weight cotton yarn (sample uses WeCrochet Dishie in Mint)

  • Size H (5.0mm) crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle to weave in ends

  • Ruler to check gauge if desired

Gauge:

It is not necessary to achieve a certain gauge for this project, but if you want the same dimensions as the sample I suggest checking.

6 ½ blocks by 6 ½ blocks = 4 inches, in pattern

Abbreviations:

ch: chain

st(s): stitch(es)

hdc: half double crochet

ss: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

f/o: finish off

ea: each

*...*: repeat the designated number of times

Pattern Notes:

  • Find the yarn used for this pattern here.

  • Follow along with the full video tutorial here.

  • This dishcloth is worked corner to corner style, so we will increase for the first ½, and decrease for the second ½.

  • When worked to pattern, your dishcloth will measure approximately 8 ½ inches wide by 8 ½ inches tall.

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of each block does NOT count as a stitch. This is the space we will slip stitch into and work through to create each block.

  • Each 3 hdc cluster is considered a block. After row 1, the stitch count will be the number of blocks you should have at the end of that row.

Dishcloth:

Ch 5

Row 1: starting in the third ch from the hook, hdc in ea ch across (3 sts/1 block)

Row 2: ch 5 and turn. Hdc in the third ch from the hook and in ea ch across. Then, ss to the ch 2 of the next block, ch 2, and work 3 hdc sts into that ch 2 space. (2 blocks)

Row 3: ch 5 and turn. Hdc in the third ch from the hook and in ea ch across. *ss to the ch 2 space of the next block, ch 2, then work 3 hdc sts into that space* until the end of the row. (3 blocks. Each row you will increase by one block)

Rows 4-13: repeat row 3 (13 blocks)

You will now start decreasing to form a square

Row 13: ch 1 and turn. Ss across the next block by place one ss in ea hdc. *ss to the next ch 2 space, ch 2, then work 3 hdc sts into that space* until one ch 2 space remains, ss to that ch 2 space. (12 blocks)

Rows 14-25: repeat row 13 (you will end with 1 block, by decreasing by one block each row)

End by slip stitching to the ch 2 space of the next block, but don’t finish off. Instead, sc around the entire square by placing two sc sts per block, and 3 sc sts per corner. Follow along with the video tutorial if needed!

f/o, weave in your ends, and enjoy your new dishcloth!
